Roberto Clemente Day 2023: A Widespread Celebration Honoring "The Great One"

Roberto Clemente Day 2023 commenced with a morning proclamation ceremony at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, where numerous dignitaries, including Senator Devlin Robinson and Pirates President Travis Williams, officially declared September 15th, 2023 as Roberto Clemente Day in Pennsylvania and across Major League Baseball. The event drew a crowd of onlookers who gathered to pay homage to the legendary figure.


The day continued as the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Roberto Clemente Foundation demonstrated their commitment to community service by organizing this annual Roberto Clemente Day of Service, with participation from players, executives, and team employees. This year's event showcased their dedication to serving the Pittsburgh community through various impactful activities at locations throughout the city.  This included visits to a local hospital, a food drive, and the assembly of non-perishable item goodie bags for service members overseas. 

Dozens of volunteers were on hand to help pack and organize the care packages. They were surprised with a spirited guest appearance by The Pirate Parrot and many members of the Pittsburgh Pirates who also embraced the spirit of service. 

All of the volunteers and players, and even The Pirate Parrot, wrote letters which were included in all of the care packages.

The Roberto Clemente Foundation hosted their annual gala on Thursday, September 14th at the Senator John Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum.  The dinner, auction, live performances, and awards show celebration were the first of many events planned around Roberto Clemente Day.  This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Clemente's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Harold Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen onstage at The Roberto Clemente Foundation Gala, joined by Luis and Roberto Clemente Jr. The event started with a cocktail reception where guests had a chance to enjoy an abundance of appetizers and refreshments before the show started.  There was some incredible live entertainment as world-renowned Pittsburgh artist Cody Sabol , and  Nöel "Mr. Conga" Quintana & The Latin Crew added to the excitement of the evening.  Cody Sabol creating a masterpiece as guests arrived to the Roberto Clemente Foundation Gala reception. .⁦ @codysabol

A Day of Fun: Successful Clemente Clinic Unites Youth

The Roberto Clemente Foundation, in collaboration with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association and Major League Baseball's Play Ball program, hosted an exhilarating youth baseball clinic on September 16th at the historic West Field in Munhall, PA. West Field, known as the former home of the Homestead Grays of the Negro League, provided a fitting backdrop for our event. Additionally, the unwavering continuous support of the Pittsburgh Pirates and The Ghost Players was a seamless extension of the Roberto Clemente Day festivities that unfolded throughout the weekend. Starting at 12 pm, the clinic welcomed boys and girls aged 6 to 12 who shared a passion for America's favorite pastime.
